Three Planes

Apply the given actions ; copy, extend, extrude, fold, rotate, align to generate five planes, dimension of which was decided by me.Each action series should include ‘extrude’ and ‘fold’ in generating planes.Assemble these five planes in a way that they can only intersect mutually perpendicular each other.

The City Image and Its Elements

This week’s reading was “The City Image and Its Elements”.My assignment is about finding examples of city edge, landmarks etc. This work made me happy, because I thougt the city which I lived in.

The contents of city images are referable to physical forms, can be classified into five types of elements; paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. And thanks to these elements, cities can be defines best.

●Landmark of Ankara; Anıtkabir

Landmarks are another type of point reference, but in this case the observer does not
enter within them, they are external. One of the most important landmarks in
Ankara is Anıtkabir.

●Node of Ankara ; Güvenpark

They may be called cores. The concept of node is related to the concept of path, since
junctions are typically the convergence of paths, events on journey. In Ankara,
example of the node is Güvenpark.

●Path of Ankara ; in Kızılay

Paths are the channels along which the observer customarily, occasionally, or
potentially moves. They may be streets, walkways, transit lines, canals,
railroads. In Ankara, one of the most important paths is in Kızılay.

●District of Ankara ; Bakanlıklar

Districts are the medium-to-large sections of the city, conceived of as having
two-dimensional extent, which the observer mentally enters “inside of”, and
which are recognizable as having some common, identifying character.Bakanlıklar is example of district in Ankara.

●Edge of Ankara ; Atatürk Bulvarı

Edges are the linear elements not used or considered as paths by the observer.Such
as; shores, railroad cuts, edges of development, walls. In Ankara, example of
the edge is Atatürk Bulvarı.

Superimpose – Superpose – Explode

                                                    IMG_20131115_054221

The superposed 4 layers, I utilized to form a 3-dimensional construct. In order to achieve the construct ı was expected to explode the 4 layers in vertical axis, intervals of which were decided by me.I used a number of stick form elements(from 6 to 8), which outted through the 4 layers at 90 degrees and extend min 5 cm from both ends.

I used 8 stick form elements(0.3 cm).Their intervals are 5cm-7,5cm-2.5cm-5cm-5cm.From at the buttom to top; paper, 2 acetates and wire which was glued on the colorless acetate. The interval between 2 acetates is small, because I wanted to see overlapping easily.

Experiencing Architecture

Rasmussen, S.E. “Basic Observations” in: Experiencing Architecture, Chapman & Hall, 1959, pp.9-34.

This week ‘s reading was “Basic Observations”.I really like the text. The writer introduced a lots of opinions.

First of all; for centuries, most people judge architecture by its external appearance. It concerned with the beauty. Then when an architect judges a building, he saw harmony with each other in a good building. He tried to explain to other people, but he didn’t succeed. In the other words; art should not be explained, it must be experienced.Architect Works with form and mass just as the sculptor does, and like the painter he works with color. But also it should solve practical problems, it must be utility.Architecture means shapes formed around man, formed to be lived in.

Architect is like a theatrical producer. And it has very difficult point. This simile is very nice.First of all, people who live in building are like actors and they are ordinary people.Second, architecture should think a distant future. In the other words, architecture should cater into future.Other point, architecture is related to landscape gardener. And finally, architect must not be overlooked in any attempt. On the other hand; architecture is an art, but artist of architecture remains in the background, it is not true like other arts.Architecture is incapable of communicating an intimate,But in fact; the rhythm and harmony have appeared at all in architecture. So architecture must be attributed to organization. This also other important point for writer and architecture.

In an example, Italian youngsters, the writer tells us very important point.Babies learn with experience. He tells us stages of babies. They learn something step-by-step with experience.Italian youngsters also learned about architecture unconsciously.Because, they were there and all the time they saw the horizontal planes and vertical walls above the slopes. And they learned to play on these elements. From such observations we learn that there are certain forms which are called hard and others soft, regardless of whether the materials they are made of are actually soft or hard.

Superimpose – Superpose

asetat

I had produced 3 different visual composition in the form of three layers( look at ‘fragmented’).Then I superimposed and photocopy them to produce one layer that will include all the information existent in three layers.I refered to this single superimposed layer rather than the three seperate layers I have produced in fragmented.

I unfolded this layer into 4 separate layers each with different materials like colored acetate, cartridge paper, wire.I used a cartridge paper which was cutted, 2 colored acetate which were drew .

Fragmented

I had produced abstract structure (look at; ”architecture and printing centre”).I focused on operations that are generated from my abstract structure and reflected the repetitions, variations, changes and ruptures by producing 3 different visual compositions in the form of three layers. I produced each layer by dividing it into fragments in a single direction.

Each layer was composed of lines and planes.I produced these three layers by draawing lines and planes on seperate overlapping tracing papers. And I also use hatching techniques to  differentiate the planes on a single layer.

Where is Black Square ?

IMG_20131110_122230

It is my work which was done in the first week of my school. A black square on the white background was wanted from me.A black square whose size was determined by me.And also its position was determined by me.I chose right&buttom side. Because black is more dominant than white. The field of the black square is approximately one-twentieth of the field of the white background.Actually this work is seemed easy, but I don’t think.Because this work should have relationship between elements.
