CULTURAL VALUES / Sivil Mimari Bellek

Hi every one !

Last days, I went to an exhibition in Çağdaş Sanatlar Merkezi located in Kennedy street in Ankara. Civil architecture structures are exhibited which are constructed in between 1930 and 1980 in Ankara. Each one is an cultural value for architecture. In this exhibition, the aim is to demonstrate the preciousness of their architectural property and their architect. The structures are the first examples of the modern architecture in Ankara. And other aim of this exhibition is that the structures must be protected.

Compare to the construction time of the structures, radical decisions exist. For instance; relation between landscape and structure, their massive forms, roof gardens, usage of linear and vertical elements, form of staircases, dynamism of their façade.

All of them has a unique form and they reflected architectural property of their period. Not only the exterior design of the structures has a unique form, but also interior design of the buildings has a unique form. Especially staircases of the structure have a different style. It is obvious that they were designed. They are dynamic architectural elements for interior of the structure.

But also dynamic forms were used in the façade as ornament. They have also unique forms in that time. Their forms have a rhythm, and they create a dynamism façade of the buildings. They do not allow to become common or ordinary to the structure.

And, when constructed the structure, different materials were used because of the improvement of technology. Lastly, I want to mention about the relation between landscape and the structure. Some of them were constructed in sloping landscape. In spite of sloping landscape, the solution of they problem is very impressive. Especially in Cinnah 19, that is more obvious.

All of them create an architectural sensibility. And all of them must be protect. They are cultural values for architecture.

Info Mapping-I

We were given 3 maps which in Ankara and 4 keywords which help to study and observe the given areas. Map the differentiations in spatial experiences within each frame. And we chose a couple keywords given and used them in a certain relation to conduct our study.

To represent our study, we used digital images of the areas and to define zones in each image in a way to represent the changes in the spatial experience. We used one single color and its opacity levels of that color to map the differentiations that the zones represent.

The City Image and Its Elements

This week’s reading was “The City Image and Its Elements”.My assignment is about finding examples of city edge, landmarks etc. This work made me happy, because I thougt the city which I lived in.

The contents of city images are referable to physical forms, can be classified into five types of elements; paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. And thanks to these elements, cities can be defines best.

●Landmark of Ankara; Anıtkabir

Landmarks are another type of point reference, but in this case the observer does not
enter within them, they are external. One of the most important landmarks in
Ankara is Anıtkabir.

●Node of Ankara ; Güvenpark

They may be called cores. The concept of node is related to the concept of path, since
junctions are typically the convergence of paths, events on journey. In Ankara,
example of the node is Güvenpark.

●Path of Ankara ; in Kızılay

Paths are the channels along which the observer customarily, occasionally, or
potentially moves. They may be streets, walkways, transit lines, canals,
railroads. In Ankara, one of the most important paths is in Kızılay.

●District of Ankara ; Bakanlıklar

Districts are the medium-to-large sections of the city, conceived of as having
two-dimensional extent, which the observer mentally enters “inside of”, and
which are recognizable as having some common, identifying character.Bakanlıklar is example of district in Ankara.

●Edge of Ankara ; Atatürk Bulvarı

Edges are the linear elements not used or considered as paths by the observer.Such
as; shores, railroad cuts, edges of development, walls. In Ankara, example of
the edge is Atatürk Bulvarı.
