TERM PROJECT | Harboring İzmir Mediterranean Academy

In this semester architectural design studio courses in TEDU will be conducted on sites located in the historical core of the city of İzmir. This is an opportunity to witness and take part in a genuine public initiative that has been started by İzmir Municipality in the Cultural Workshop of 2009.

The topic of our project is to design a building that harbours İzmir Mediterranean Academy. The challenge is to project an edifice that represents the vision of the institution towards;

  • an architectural design
  • an all-inclusive public building
  • an ecologically conscious technology
  • a reappraisal of the historical context

The project site is selected both to be suitable for İMA  and also to facilitate the design with multiple potential, problems and values. It is at the junction of Kordon, Konak Pier, Fevzi Paşa Boulevard, pedestrian path to Konak and Kemeraltı that is the historical bazaar of the city.

The program is constituted of functions that are both used by İMA and at the same time form revenue for the institution. There are three major groups; convention facilities(auditorium, multi-purpose hall, seminar rooms), exhibition spaces, archives and research. The plot area is around 6000 m2.

OVERVIEW on ARCH401 | Emsalsiz’

This semester we have tried to design a structure which have 60.000-m2 construction site in Söğütözü. In the term project “EMSALSİZ”, first of all we analyzed the site, and specified the program as a group and then we designed the structure individually.

In the analyze process, we have analyzed the site and specific structures in Söğütözü as a group. It is important for specified the program and the creation of the design idea. And we learned how to analyze.

The one difference between EMSALSİZ and other term projects is that program of the structure is specified by us. While specifying the program, the analyses on site have created input on the program. Thinking about the programs, functions, and actors are critical process for design process. Dealing with program is different experience for me, and I explored some principles about creating program. And this period I examined some example of library in the world every scale.

After the specified the program, we were dealing with bigness. Before the dealing with bigness of the structure, I have comprehended the scale. Because of the bigness there are some problems, which we must handle it such as vertical circulation, service-served spaces, otopark. It is important to screen on examples on Turkey and the world, which are similar scale to realize the scale.

The term project: EMSALSİZ have been introduced about the definition and had discussion about the bigness. Dealing with this issue and the term project is very crucial considering the last decades large urban projects in the metropolitan areas have been challenging architectural design in respect to complexity, program and scale before the being architect.

FINAL JURY | The Term Project : EMSALSİZ

After the preliminary jury, I focused on circulation and served-service spaces of the structure considering criticism on preliminary jury. Library is rising from ground level to top. It directed to green area while rising. A core which contain circulation of the library is rising with library. Around the core, there are service spaces for other function with a ramp which are also shaping according to library. The social spaces reached with the library. Besides that, a city archive are designed basement level with a underground street which connected with railway station.

PRELIMINARY JURY | Emsalsiz

After specified the program specifically, we have started to designing the library individually. I wanted to design a library is rising from the entrance floor to the last level. While rising, it will expand. The other programs such as auditorium, exhibition hall, cinema, game center have been designed according to library.

In the preliminary jury, I have received some criticisms about the vertical circulation and serves-served spaces. It is important for this structure on this scale.

PROGRAM | The Term Project: Emsalsiz

After the analyses of the Söğütözü site, we have created a program for the term project:emsalsiz as a group. The site is on the Eskişehir Road so we focused on the actors in Eskişehir Road. There are some universities such as METU, TOBB ETU and Hacettepe University, a lot of ministries such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And then we have specified their needs.

We focused on a library with high-tech industry ‘mediatheque’ as a program. People will use this mediatheque as a working space and group working space with technological compliance and the mediatheque will allow information storage of universities and ministries as city archive. This program is important that it allow to shaping environment.

After the focusing on library idea, we have analysed Provincial Public Library and National Library which are city libraries in Ankara in terms of their programs, their capacities, their users. And we have decided program, actors, and spaces. The spaces of the mediatheque will creating dynamic spaces with different programs.

TERM PROJECT | EMSALSİZ: Without Measure Without Precedent

In the first semester of the fourth year design studio the topic has been chosen that to introduce the challenges that the contemporary urban condition imposes on architecture by conceptualising the word emsalsiz. The word emsalsiz is used in two senses. The first is originally an urban transformation projects this ratio. The second meaning of emsalsiz we may prefer to this meaning of emsalsizlik that is without precedent.

After studying some analyses, the outcomes of these analyses will be taken as the basis for the definition of the program of the second assignment where a specific plot within the larger district is given as the project site; the site of the OYAK Renault factories in Söğütözü. In phase 3 the students will propose their urban strategy to develop the site towards the public integration of the whole district and write a program for the assigned emsal.

As an introduction to term exercise, groups will focus on mapping and debate on the main concepts of the project:

  • geomorphology and landscaping
  • mobility and access
  • plan update and physical morphology
  • land-use, functions and viability
  • boundaries and security
  • silhouette and site elevation/sections
