CONSTRUCTION SITE / Anadolu OSB, Ankara

Last days, Tedu Arch went to a construction site in Anadolu OSB. It is necessary for Arch241 course. The aim of the trip is to see usage of structural elements. One of the architects of the structure is our lecturer, Onur YÜNCÜ. As the first impression of the structure, I can say that timber and reinforced-concrete were used in the structure. The base of the structure, there are masonry walls. The upper part of masonry wall there are reinforce-concretes then wooden roof exist. The usage of the timber has an advantage of warm appearance  The structure is not high rise so it is supported warm appearance. The building is oriented towards the scene, and the spaces are designed accordingly.

If we look at the interior of the structure, structural elements of the structure can be seen very easily, they are not hidden. There are timber beams which are carried by three columns. These columns are not too thick, because the structure is two story building. So carrying load is less. The basic structural system of the structure is that there is lintel above the columns and there are columns above the lintel. And there exists flat slap which carries false floor. The most obvious structural element in this structure is timber truss. Timber truss is not only used as structural element, but also it is used as design element. In fact, all load-bearing system creates the structure, because load-bearing walls divided the spaces, and placement of the load-bearing system is also about design issue. There must be a relationship between the gap of the columns and space. In this structure, all the load-bearing system are repeated accordantly.

In this structure, in some places, the glass walls are used. In this case, we can also see the structural element. The bars between the glass walls are as a load bearing wall.

Other issue about in this structure is hinge. Some types of hinge are used in some cases. For instances; the case of the intersection of wall and  timber truss, black coating is used. And also in combination of columns and ground, the hinge are used. I think the most obvious hinge examples of this structure is that the windows are used as a hinge in between roofs and walls.

PRELIMINARY JURY-2 / Patterned Episodes in Between

Last week, we had pre-jury in ARCH201 course. This jury was the last pre-jury of this semester.

In this project, I focused on scale differences between squatter houses and residential buildings. Because of their scale, residential buildings are like a wall. They define a border. However, squatter houses have more permeable. So, I created a corridor which is permeable and impermeable in some cases.

Here are some photos of my model and drawings.

CULTURAL VALUES / Sivil Mimari Bellek

Hi every one !

Last days, I went to an exhibition in Çağdaş Sanatlar Merkezi located in Kennedy street in Ankara. Civil architecture structures are exhibited which are constructed in between 1930 and 1980 in Ankara. Each one is an cultural value for architecture. In this exhibition, the aim is to demonstrate the preciousness of their architectural property and their architect. The structures are the first examples of the modern architecture in Ankara. And other aim of this exhibition is that the structures must be protected.

Compare to the construction time of the structures, radical decisions exist. For instance; relation between landscape and structure, their massive forms, roof gardens, usage of linear and vertical elements, form of staircases, dynamism of their façade.

All of them has a unique form and they reflected architectural property of their period. Not only the exterior design of the structures has a unique form, but also interior design of the buildings has a unique form. Especially staircases of the structure have a different style. It is obvious that they were designed. They are dynamic architectural elements for interior of the structure.

But also dynamic forms were used in the façade as ornament. They have also unique forms in that time. Their forms have a rhythm, and they create a dynamism façade of the buildings. They do not allow to become common or ordinary to the structure.

And, when constructed the structure, different materials were used because of the improvement of technology. Lastly, I want to mention about the relation between landscape and the structure. Some of them were constructed in sloping landscape. In spite of sloping landscape, the solution of they problem is very impressive. Especially in Cinnah 19, that is more obvious.

All of them create an architectural sensibility. And all of them must be protect. They are cultural values for architecture.

DIKMEN VALLEY / Site Survey

Dikmen Valley is given to us to comprehend the site conditions and the context which is second year final project in architectural studio. As a beginning of the project, indicating functions, drawing site sections and marking landmarks and points of vistas were assigned us. And untouched area of Dikmen Valley was defined we are going to study. There are surrounding with residential apartment blocks and squatter houses.
