UNIVERSITY HOUSING | Assignment 2.1 PROBLEM DEFINITION

UntitledThe first assignment after the designing logo was analysis and synthesis which both includes objective and subjective qualities of the given areas. We were expected to build up a “problem definition” for the design task our office “dem architects” is given with the scenario “University Housing”.
The tentative project area is shown at the map. Many problems can be suggested to have two major parts to begin with; the content and the context.

In this presentation, we focused on Kurtuluş Park. We analysed some graphics, and  photos. Major parts of analysises contains the observation on Kurtuluş Park such as location of the areas, the density of green area, common areas, safety condition of the area . And also, the program which given to us was taken into consideration; such as jobs of users.

PRELIMINARY JURY 1 / All-in-One

Last day, we have a pre-jury to present our project in Siteler. We were expected to explain our project in reference to the spatial concept discussed in studio hours such as main space(s) – sub space(s), served – service space(s), transition space(s), approaching space(s), enveloping space(s), interstitial space(s), contingent space(s)…etc.

As you known, we designed a home-office for an industrial designer to live and work here. According to our scenario, we shaped the proposal.

My project have a two part which are home part and office part. I seperated to them because of my scenario. The industrial designer live there his family and, at the same time two temporary subjects exist to work in office part. The office part is two-storey, the home part is three-storey. The office part and home part are connecting each other an area which is transition space.

Our site in Siteler has a big problem about sun-light condition. Because of the light condition, the structure is adjacent at the one side. In the other side, there are a space which define the entrance of the structure. The project has a pure form which covered a “C” shape plane. The circulation space has a linear strip.

KAYAKÖY, FETHİYE / A Site Trip

We went to Kayaköy in Muğla, as a site trip. The site is a part of our project. Kayaköy was a village which located in mountain side. It was Greek village which called as Levissi or Karmylassos. But after the Turkish war of independence, it was abandoned owing to population exchange between Greece and Turkey. The village is damaged in over the years, especially in 1957, the eartquake demolished the village. But still it protected its own characteristic property. All houses of he village were made up of stone. Houses, churches, and chapels were exist. The structures were singe or two storeys. They were seen as, they produced according to pursued the same principle, and in somewhere they changed from each other. Because of the location of the house, which placed in mountain, they were seen as sprinkled small houses. Again the location of the houses, they have a beautiful view, fresh air. Kayaköy is like an architectural museum which have a brief information about nineteen century architecture.

INTERACTION MATRIX AND SPATIAL SCENARIOS

This assignment is a start to design a home-office in Siteler. We created a scenario to obtain the spatial condition of the our home-office which helps us to create spaces. We were asked to study the habitation patterns and indicate the details of our scenario for the house through a graphic layout. The graphics were used to indicate the number of subjects, daily fluctuations in the number of subjects. In the scenario, the industrial designer is must to be, and then other subject/s created by us. The designer can be female or male. S/he can live alone or other subject/s live there… etc. In my home office, an industirial designer  and his wife live with their children. And two temporary people, who employees in design office, is coming in there. And weekdays have a routine. Contrast the weekdays, the weekends haven’t got a routine. A child is living another city and s/he is coming biweekly.

THE ELEMENT IN BETWEEN AND ON / Step 2

Hello there!

The problem at this stage to design the element of architecture, staircase & ramp. This element both shapes and is shaped by the presence of two different spatial environments, namely hard landscape and soft landscape. Then, in designing the element  we were required to consider the conditions; in between the hard landscape and soft landscape, on the hard landscape, on the soft landscape.

In this assignment, I produced soft landscape(textured one) which has level difference is less and hard landscape which has level difference is more. So the element of architecture, staircase shaped and were shaped by landscapes. On the hard landscape, the traits of staircase smaller than on the soft landscapes’ one. So the experience is changing while going up or down.

ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE / Step 1

The assignment was given about exploring the spatial experiences of elements of architecture such as window, corridor, door, wall, stair&ramp. We were expected to make groups and every group choose one of these elements. Poster design for presentation, sketches, and models were wanted to us in this assignment. Our group analyzed the staircase and ramp. We focused on functions of staircase and ramp, and while considering function of staircase and ramp, we studied on level differences.
